Ironclad needs some ways to stay alive while playing tons of Attacks, and Crimson Mantle is one of the good ones. Synergizes with self-damage cards and relics, and makes a good chunk of Block per turn for not much upfront investment.
It's definitely worth noting that this won't make you any Block on the turn you play it. It's a little slow to get rolling.
