Intro to Elites in Slay the Spire 2
Elites in Slay the Spire 2 are tough and challenging enemies that serve as major difficulty spikes during your climb, with important rewards waiting for you should you be able to take them down.
They are dedicated mini-bosses on the map, significantly harder than standard hallway monsters but not quite as overwhelming as an Act Boss. They are explicitly designed as a test of your greed and preparation, waiting to severely punish players who haven't drafted a cohesive deck.

What are Elites in Slay the Spire 2?
At their core, most Elites are DPS checks or block checks designed to test whether you've built your deck correctly. Some punish you for lacking burst damage, others for lacking AoE, and a few specifically counter certain playstyles.
For instance, the Entomancer shuffles a Dazed into your deck every time you hit it, making small-attack strategies like Shiv decks or Claw builds particularly vulnerable to it. Learning which Elites punish which strategies is key to smart pathing decisions.
Voluntarily routing your path to face these terrors might seem counterintuitive, especially when you encounter Act 1 Elites like the Phrog Parasite. This specific encounter is notorious for clogging your deck with damaging "Infection" status cards before splitting into smaller Wrigglers, posing a tough challenge.

However, you should actively choose to fight Elites whenever possible because they act as a mandatory pacing check for your run as a whole, and not just a spot-check. If you cannot output enough burst damage to defeat the Phrog before it splits and overwhelms you with minions, your deck simply isn't strong enough to survive the upcoming challenges anyway.
How to get better at Elite fights in StS2
Understanding the fight patterns also helps, regardless of your deck, and the more knowledge you accumulate, the easier these Elite fights become. Once the Phrog Parasite dies and spawns its four Wrigglers, the fight becomes manageable if you understand the pattern: the first and third Wrigglers attack while the second and fourth buff themselves and shuffle Infections, then they swap roles each turn. Targeting the attacking Wrigglers first means you can take zero damage every other turn, similar to how experienced players handle the Sentry fight in the original Slay the Spire.
Slay the Spire 2 features two separate Act 1 paths (Overgrowth and Underdocks), each with its own set of three Elites. Overgrowth features the Bygone Effigy (widely considered the hardest of the six thanks to its punishing damage output after it wakes from its two-turn sleep) alongside the more forgiving Berdonis and Phrog Parasite. Meanwhile, Underdocks offers the Fantasma Gardeners, Skulking Colony, and Terriel.
Multi-enemy Elites like the Fantasma Gardeners and Phrog Parasite reward AoE-heavy decks, while single-target Elites like the Bygone Effigy and Terriel demand raw burst damage. Keep this in mind when choosing your Act 1 path and planning your battles.
Why are Elite fights important?
The primary reason you risk your health against Elites comes down to the guaranteed, run-defining loot they offer. Every Elite you defeat drops a Relic, which are powerful permanent buffs that fundamentally strengthen your character's synergies. They are essential for winning a run.
So, the question is not "should I fight an Elite" because the baseline answer is yes. The question is, "must I avoid fighting an Elite here?"

Elite encounters also offer a much higher chance for rare card drops and produce significantly more gold than regular fights.
Fighting Elites in the early game is a must if you want to accumulate the power necessary to conquer the true challenges waiting higher up the Spire.
